The entire world laid to waste. There are no second chances.

An ancient machine that produced icefire was destroyed twenty years ago, but the deadly magic is again on the increase. No one understands why or where it’s coming from.

King Isandor sends his Eagle Knights to investigate a concentration of icefire in the mountains at the border. It appears that the neighbouring country Arania wants revenge for a defeat in a war forty years ago, and is using icefire as weapon. The evil power source must be eradicated.

Lana is a student about to make a vitally important discovery about icefire, but the people in power, including her own father, are too busy talking about war to listen to her.

Sand Storm Moonfire trilogy Book 1 eBook Patty Jansen

Patty Jansen knows how to tell a good story, and I read this book because the next one in the Ambassador series isn't ready yet. It's interesting, but it does skip around a lot. In spite of that, the story is building to a conclusion that is not reached in this book...and the next part of the Moonfire series isn't out yet either. Character development in this story is a bit thin, but since it's the first of a series, that may change. The society being described in this unknown place at an unknown time, is a strange blend of what we would call archaic and advanced on Earth. The two main cultures who are headed for conflict have two different terms for a phenomenon that I find a bit confusing, because the term "sonorics" brings to mind sound energy, but the term "icefire" and it's description seems to be radiation with an electrostatic component. I find this disturbing, because combining those concepts in our own reality could represent a lethal, long-term combination resulting in mass death. One thing I know about Patty from having spent many hours inside of her realities, is that she has a real handle on the sciences, her technical descriptions align closely with things I know about from my own engineering background, and her evolution of those concepts into the future is not farfetched at all. There are fanciful ideas in this book that are delightful on one hand, and a bit preposterous on the other...but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief because Jansen is able to create such amazing pictures in my head. It's like watching a movie while telepathically knowing what the characters are thinking as well as hearing what people say. There are elements of medieval style, dark, brutish oppression, an unknown influence from the past that threatens to overwhelm the more civilized culture, unexpected sexual preferences, and unanticipated love interests. Like all of the books the wonderful Ambassador series, I digested this one much too quickly, and now, once again, am left hanging...waiting for the next one. The tough thing for Patty Jansen, I think, is to sustain all these different threads at once, but if I had a choice, she would go full bore on one thread and bring somebody to a conclusion. I felt the ending of this book was a bit abrupt...and now I have to wait 2 months until the planned release of the next one in the Moonfire series. It's odd, though, because it seems that the Ambassador books, which must have come before this series, were written by a much more mature author. I suppose different settings and subject matter might create a difference in style, but truthfully, I'm just holding my breath, waiting to find out what happens after "Blue Diamond Sky", so that might be making this review a little unfair.

Sand Storm Moonfire trilogy Book 1 eBook Patty Jansen Reviews

My interest in it went down. Don't think I will continue with the series.
A wonderful story full of creative mechanical and mythical tales and people. The plot neatly refers to "The Icefire Trilogy", so even if you haven't read it you still have an understanding of some of what happened. A truly epic adventure. Great read.
Twenty years on and no one seems to have learned from the mistakes they made. Sounds familiar! When sonorics start showing up in new and dangerous places it can only be bad news. Angry enemies who don't fear death are bad news. They have access to money have come out to play and the deck is stacked badly against the good guys.
Having read the first trilogy about this world with its unique cultures and with well developed and likeable characters, I had to continue into the next. I wasn't disappointed. This book starts twenty years after the last one ended, with new dangers threatening characters we already know and many added to enrich the tale.
If you loved the first trilogy, as I did, you'll love this book as well.
Not going to do much detail about the plot or the people....just that this book held my attention...there are chapters that I could not read fast enough to see what was going to happen and others that I took my time with just to enjoy the people and their interaction...going to read entire series.....enjoy.
I read the first trilogy and am into the second. Great characters and plot. My only complaint is that words are missing that my mind has to fill in i.e.- "He was happy that she seemed to have come of her shell"
Too many times this occurs and it throws the reader (me) out of the story to have to mentally substitute missing words. Editors need to be more diligent.
It took me a while to get used to reading modern expressions in an era where characters wore cloaks, had old-fashioned technology (steam trains and telegrams), and still believed in magic, but the story itself was very interesting. I found myself peeved when I reached the end because I wanted to know what had happened to Zaina, who had rocked the status quo by her dreadful deed, done in self-defence. I've bought the next book in the series to satisfy my curiosity, and I expect it to be as entertaining as Sand and Storm.
